 1969 – Central Tourist Courses of the Central Council for Tourism and Excursions;
 1981 – Institute of Up-grading Professional Qualification of employees of tourist and excursion organizations of the Central Council for Tourism and Excursions
 1991 – Institute for Tourism
 1992 – The beginning of the experiment on introducing multi-level system of professional training for tourism
 1993 – Institute for Tourism is reorganized into Russian International Academy for Tourism (RIAT)
 1998 – Post-graduate training is introduced; Specialized Scientific Board for defending Ph.D. dissertations and assigning Ph. D. scientific degrees starts functioning
 1999 – UNESCO Chair for the Cultural Tourism in the Aims of Peace and Development is established
 2000 – MA courses are introduced
 2003 – Specialized board for assigning scientific degrees at the Full Doctorate level begins to work
 2005 – Academy passes through the procedure of international Certification System according to the quality standards of ISO 9001-2000.
 2005 – VATEL-RIAT Institute for Hospitality is established in Moscow
 2006 – Academy is certified by WTO.TedQual Certification System
